Capella to lift luxury to new heights on Sentosa

Capella Hotels and Resorts' entry into Sentosa is seen as yet another lifting of the bar for the Singapore tourism industry.

Last month, Millenia Hotel Private Limited, an associate company of the Pontiac Land Group, owner of the The Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore, Conrad Centennial Singapore and The Regent Singapore, announced that it had chosen the company, founded by legendary hotelier Horst Schulze, to manage its new resort on Sentosa.

In making the announcement, Mr Kwee Liong Tek, Chairman of Millenia Hotel, who worked with Mr Schulze for over a decade, said: "We derive fulfilment in enriching our social and architectural landscape, breaking new ground and raising the bar each time. We believe Capella is the right choice to realise a shared vision and we look forward to unveiling our rare jewel."

It is Capella's first resort in Asia. Schulze, the hotelier behind the Ritz-Carlton service trademark, launched the top-tier brand, named for the alpha star of the constellation Auriga in 2005, to fulfil a need for luxury service that he felt existing five star brands could no longer meet.

"They want luxury that is subtle, rather than contrived, access to whatever they want when they want it, privacy, flawless service, and the option to avail themselves of extended hotel services," said Schulze. "In essence, they want to be treated just as they would be while being hosted at a friend's private residence."

Capella Singapore is spread out over 1.3 million square feet of rainforest. With 110 villas and suites, it occupies only 36 percent of the rolling hills. Total development cost for the project is US$250 million. It will welcome its first guests in the summer of 2008.

Welcoming Capella's entry into Sentosa, Darrell Metzger, Chief Executive Officer of Sentosa Leisure Group, said: "Sentosa is honoured and proud to welcome the first Capella hotel in Asia. The presence of Capella will further strengthen Sentosa's offerings of luxurious developments catering to discerning guests. Such niche developments in the eastern precinct of the island have been envisioned in the Sentosa Masterplan and fit in well with the marina and luxurious residential developments in Sentosa Cove."

Capella's other hotels are in Mexico, Ireland, Germany and Austria.
