October 2005

A Word from the STB's Deputy Chairman & Chief Executive

Welcome to the 2nd edition of P@SSPORT. I hope you enjoyed reading the inaugural issue and found the information useful.

In his National Day Rally speech on 21 August 2005, Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong outlined his vision to turn Singapore into a vibrant global city full of energy and excitement. This is intended to galvanise the developments of the city in the coming years, including attracting investments into Singapore.

The Singapore Flyer, a privately-funded giant observation wheel at Marina Bay is one such investment. When completed in 2008, it will forever change the Singapore skyline and be an important addition to tourism offerings. Together with the two planned Integrated Resorts at Sentosa and Marina, the Singapore Flyer will catalyse investments in Singapore's tourism sector and build its capacity to welcome the projected increase in outbound travellers coming from high-growth regional markets.

Adding more hardware alone is not enough. We will also need to focus on improving our software. In the same speech, Prime Minister Lee highlighted the need to build a strong service culture. He challenged us to mobilise the entire nation - service providers, the employers, and the consumers to do our part to build a strong service culture. Ultimately, Singaporeans and tourists stand to benefit from a more gracious society. To signal the importance of this initiative, the Second Minister for Finance and Foreign Affairs, Mr Raymond Lim, has been placed in charge of this national effort. The tourism sector has an important stake in this initiative and we should give it our best support.

October is also the month for ethnic festivities! Do take time to experience the glittery festival light-ups as we celebrate Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali.

Lastly, we continue to welcome your feedback on this e-newsletter, so please feel free to drop us an email.

Sincerely,
Lim Neo Chian
