STB awards three scholarships to NTU students

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has awarded scholarships to three students to pursue the Bachelor of Business (Tourism & Hospitality Management) at Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University.

Sharon Kwek Soo Hua, Eunice Leng Qi Wei and Yeo Mengni are the pioneer batch to receive the STB Scholarship.

Sharon studied at Dunman High School and Temasek Polytechnic. She is also the STB’s 2006 Silver Medal winner for the Diploma in Tourism Management offered by Temasek Polytechnic.

Eunice is from Raffles Girls’ School and Hwa Chong Junior College.  She is a National Fencer and has competed at school, state and national levels.

Mengni is from River Valley High School and Hwa Chong Junior College.  She obtained Gold with honours at Singapore Youth Festival 2005.

In congratulating the students, the STB’s Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive, Mr Lim Neo Chian, said: 'The STB is committed to developing a pool of competent professionals and effective leaders who will drive the growth of Singapore’s tourism industry.

'By offering these scholarships, we hope to attract more bright and young talents with a passion for the tourism industry, like yourselves, to join us in this exciting and vibrant industry.'

He said these were exciting times for the bright and talented to enter the tourism industry. 'There will be new and exciting tourism products, many new jobs for Singaporeans and many new opportunities in the coming years.'

He pointed to record highs in visitor arrivals in 2004 and 2005, the launching of the Tourism 2015 roadmap, which calls for a doubling of arrivals and tripling of tourism receipts, the setting aside of a S$2 billion Tourism Development Fund and the development of the two Integrated Resorts.

The three-year programme offers a comprehensive curriculum that will expose the students to all aspects of the industry. Apart from business subjects, the scholars will also have the opportunity to read core subjects, as well as electives, on tourism and hospitality management.

The STB Scholarship covers the following:
• Tuition fee directly payable by students (after tuition grant)
• Living expenses of S$6,000 per academic year

Upon graduation, the scholars are required to serve a three-year bond with any tourism-related company (such as hotels, attractions, conference or exhibition organisers, food and beverage or travel services) in Singapore.
