Quiz show brings young contestants to Singapore

It was a quiz that was no child’s play. To win, students had to take part in treasure hunts, pick up local skills and learn a trade and actually use it in real life.

And six students from India did precisely that when they won a chance to take part in the Singapore leg of the Cadbury Bournvita Quiz show, one of India’s oldest quiz shows.

The Singapore leg, which took place from 31 May to 3 June, saw a visually challenged young boy piecing together clues in the treasure hunt while a world-famous child percussionist learned to play the lion dance drums.

The Cadbury Bournvita Quiz began in the 1970s. Originally held in cities across the country, it later became a radio and then a TV show.

Over 1,500 students participated in the North India finals held late last year and of the top 100, 11 were selected for the TV show and 6 made it to the Singapore leg.

The winner of the Quiz Show gets a free trip to visit the Seven Wonders of the World.

Hosted by India’s popular quizmaster, Derek O’Brien, the show featured six child contestants aged 10 to 14 years old participating in a treasure hunt in which they put together clues which led them to discover places such as Merlion Park, Lau Pa Sat and Clarke Quay.

The top four contestants moved on to the next round where they had to learn about the local culture and pick up skills such as how to play the lion dance drums, and sing local Chinese and Malay folksongs.

In the third round, the top four contestants had to learn to be attraction guides and show tourists around the Singapore Zoological Gardens, Jurong Bird Park and the Singapore Science Centre.

‘The featuring of these locations in Singapore allowed us to showcase the various facets of Uniquely Singapore as well as highlight the edutainment factor embedded in the experience.

‘The aim of this collaboration is to create awareness of the varied unique experiences in Singapore which appeal to Indian families and overseas school trips,’ said Ms Rebecca Lim, Singapore Tourism Board's Area Director of Western India in Mumbai.
