Nine awarded scholarships for inaugural intake of Cornell-Nanyang Institute MMH programme

The Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management (CNI) at Nanyang Technological University will be welcoming its first batch of students in May for the Master of Management in Hospitality (MMH) programme.

Of the 19 students in this inaugural batch, nine were presented with scholarships totalling S$776,000, offered by international industry partners such as the Singapore Tourism Board, CapitaLand, InterContinental Hotels Group and YTL Hotels.  4 other candidates are being sponsored by their organizations to attend the programme. Companies offering sponsorships to their employees include Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Ngee Ann Polytechnic and the Singapore Tourism Board.

The scholarships range from $70,000 to $125,000 each and cover tuition fees, travel and living expenses at NTU in Singapore and Cornell in Ithaca, New York.

CNI is an alliance between Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration and NTU’s Nanyang Business School.  The MMH programme is aimed at grooming middle and senior management talent for the booming hospitality industry in Singapore and the region, and the diversity in the backgrounds of the pioneer students illustrates the global relevance and attractiveness of the programme.

Says Dr. Judy Siguaw, Dean CNI: “We are very proud of the high caliber and diversity of the pioneer batch of students. We look forward to them taking up management and leadership positions in the burgeoning Asian hospitality industry. In addition, they will join the illustrious alumni from two leading institutions – Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration and NTU’s Nanyang Business School – which have produced many high-flyers in the industry.”

Of the nine scholarship recipients, six were awarded the scholarship by the Singapore Tourism Board.  STB’s Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive Mr Lim Neo Chian said,  "We are very pleased to present these six individuals with the STB scholarship for the inaugural intake of the CNI Master of Management in Hospitality programme.

“Being Singapore’s first graduate hospitality programme, the MMH programme will help to groom and develop talents for Singapore's tourism sector, as STB gears up to achieve our targets of achieving 17 million visitors and S$30 billion in tourism receipts, as well as creating an additional 100,000 new jobs in the services sector, by 2015.

“STB is committed to developing a skilled and competent workforce to support the growth of Singapore's tourism and hospitality sector, and will continue to provide such scholarships at MMH where necessary."
