STB offers scholarships to support NTU specialisation
The STB is supporting the newly-launched Nanyang Technological University (NTU)’s Bachelor of Business in Tourism and Hospitality Management with S$350,000 worth of scholarships.

The new specialization aims to produce graduates who are well-trained in the fundamentals of tourism and hospitality management with in-depth knowledge of service operations as well as revenue and facility management.

The STB has set targets to achieve S$30 billion tourism receipts, 17 million visitor arrivals and create an additional 100,000 tourism-related jobs by 2015.

Associate Professor Christina Soh, Vice Dean (Undergraduate Business) at NBS, said, “We have leveraged our established business programme and strategic alliance with Cornell’s School of Hotel Management to develop this new specialisation.  Students will benefit from real-world case studies and team projects, which are integral to our B.Bus programme. Through our rigorous curriculum, they will be equipped with the latest knowledge in business management and the necessary communication skills.  More importantly, they will be trained to take on critical roles in the dynamic and rapidly expanding tourism and hospitality industry.”

The STB will facilitate undergraduate internships and applied research projects through its network of international business travel and MICE (Meetings, Incentive Travel, Conventions and Exhibitions) organising companies, hotels, and other firms within the tourism and hospitality industry.

Mr James Tan, STB’s Director for Resource Development said, “This new programme adds to the tertiary tourism courses available for those keen to join the tourism sector. We expect NTU business graduates with the tourism and hospitality management specialisation to have a shorter learning curve and be much more adept with the requirements of the industry. For this reason, the STB has committed to providing internship support and scholarships to outstanding students. We hope to use this platform to spot talent and groom them into future captains of the tourism industry. ”

The new specialisation has garnered strong support from the industry. Experienced industry personnel are expected to participate through guest lectures, and adjunct professorships.  Several leading tourism organizations have also indicated interest in participating in the professional internships.

About the scholarships: All GCE ‘A’ Level and Polytechnic graduates with outstanding academic achievements and impressive records of co-curricular activities are eligible to apply for the Scholarship, which is open to Singaporeans and Permanent Residents only.

The scholar will undergo at least one internship programme with the STB or a company designated by the STB during the study period. Upon graduation, he/she is also required to serve a three-year bond with any tourism-related company in Singapore.
