World Tourism Organisation is now UNWTO To avoid the frequent confusion between the two WTOs – World Tourism Organization and the Geneva-based World Trade Organisation, the General Assembly has approved the addition of the letters UN (for United Nations) to the start of acronym for the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) in English and in Russian.
The frequent confusion – especially for the media – arose when the name World Trade Organisation was adopted and with it the acronym WTO in English. This problem did not arise in other languages because the acronym became OMC when "trade" is translated as "commerce". However, in the languages of French and Spanish, the acronym will remain as OMT. |
