Leisure Events Join in the festive atmosphere in Chinatown as Singapore prepares to welcome the Year of the Dog. Singapore’s Chinese New Year Chun Jie (Spring Festival) Celebrations is one of Asia’s most vibrant and exciting. Cheer on the Singapore Team when the "Uniquely Singapore" yacht participating in the Clipper Round-the-World Race makes a stop-over in Singapore, or join in the rock music festival at Sembawang. Don't miss the "Sentosa Flowers 2006", a unique floral and botanical extravaganza, on the tropical resort island of Sentosa.

Chinese New Year Festivities Singapore’s Chinese New Year Chun Jie (Spring Festival) Celebrations is one of Asia’s most vibrant and exciting. For Chun Jie 2006, visitors and locals alike can immerse in a Uniquely Singapore Chinese cultural experience with festive sights, shopping and dining experiences. From 7 January - 12 February, the streets of Chinatown will be brightly lit and decorated to usher in the Year of the Dog. There will be street bazaars with a dazzling array of festive goodies like waxed duck, barbecued sweet meats, cookies and New Year accessories. On 28 January, count down to the Chinese New Year with thousands of revellers amidst a spectacular fireworks display.
From 27 January - 12 February, visitors can also come face to face with the towering God of Fortune and enjoy special nightly performances at the Singapore River Hongbao.
Sure-Win Prosperity Lucky Dip at Chinatown Heritage Centre Foreign visitors stand a chance to win attractive prizes when they present their passports to qualify for a lucky dip this Chinese New Year. What’s more, one lucky winner stands to win a grand prize of return air-tickets to Singapore! Other attractive prizes include souvenir Chinese New Year collectibles, admission tickets to local attractions, as well as shopping and dining vouchers.
The Prosperity Lucky Dip will be held at the Visitor Information Centre at the Chinatown Heritage Centre and the Singapore River Hong Bao at the Esplanade Park on 7 – 28 January and 27 January – 12 February respectively.

Clipper Round-the-World Race Calls in Singapore Flagged off on 18 September 2005, the Clipper Round-the-World Race has already covered more than a quarter of its round-the-world journey. After the stop in Fremantle, Western Australia, the race will resume on New Year’s Eve and the first Clipper is expected to sail into Singapore’s Keppel Bay on 15 January.
A welcome party is planned on 17 January, where Minister for Defence, Mr Teo Chee Hean, who is also President of the Singapore National Olympic Council, will present the Uniquely Singapore Cup to the winning Clipper for the Fremantle-Singapore leg.
Celebrations will continue at the Singapore Festival Village on Sentosa Cove, to be opened on 20 January by Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan. A special sail past is planned as part of the grand opening festivities. The Singapore Festival Village will have pavilions showcasing local brands, culture and food. There will also be various land and sea sports activities that visitors can try. The crew of the 10 Clipper yachts will be present 21 - 22 January to share tales of their journey.
On 27 January, the Clipper fleet will sail off for their next stop in Qingdao, P R China. The ceremony will be graced by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. The sending-off event is open to the public, who can catch the Clippers departing from Keppel Bay (along the former King’s Dock) from 10am to noon. |

Sembawang Festival For the first time, a weekend rock music festival with more than 30 bands, four DJs and two dance acts will be held at Sembawang Park from 21 - 22 January. It will be the curtain raiser to a ten-year plan to bring independent, progressive and contemporary bands, gigs and DJ artists to the suburbs of Singapore. A first in Singapore, the Sembawang Festival is set to create a new buzz and vibrancy for international music in areas away from the central zones of Singapore. Youths (16 years of age and older) can camp out in Sembawang Park to celebrate music in the festival. The Sembawang Festival currently has 40 international and home-grown acts performing, including Regurgitator (Australia), The Animators (New York), Nineteen 27 (Australia) and Pug Jelly (Singapore). |

Sentosa Flowers 2006 In celebration of Chinese New Year, Sentosa will create a multi-hued tropical floral and botanical spectacle at the Sentosa Flowers 2006 with over one million blooms from more than 1,000 species, varieties and cultivars of flora. Held for the second year, this event will also feature unique species of herbs and flowers in a fantasy-inspired garden with whimsical giant-sized walk-through dioramas of flowers, fruits and garden creatures. On the last day of the event, visitors will be treated to a spectacular display of fireworks. The event will be held at the Fountain Gardens, Sentosa, from 29 January - 5 February. |
